Block 4 has no homework.

Writing in class and for homework

In class today we had a timed writing assessment.  The students were given the topic and told to fill out a graphic organizer for their essays for homework last night.  Those who took the time to do the homework were able to spend the full 45 minutes writing.  Those who did not have their homework finished had to do that before writing, yet still within the 45 minute time allotment.  Obviously, it was a much harder task to do both at the same time!  In each class, only a few students finished in the given time.  They were not allowed to finish the essay for homework.  It will be graded “as is”.  Though students may be upset about this, they should realize a few things:

1.  Writing in a specific time period is a skill that we are working on.  I realize it is a work in progress.  We will be continuing to work on this skill, as it is a necessary one to have.

2.  The essays are graded pretty liberally—I am looking broadly at format of the essay, keeping focus, having details like quotations from the text, and basic spelling, grammar, and mechanics.

3.  When given a chance to prepare in advance for an essay, it is a good idea to do so.

4.  Since the topic is one of interest, we may take the writing piece through the writing process at a later date, though the grade on the original will still stand.

Tonight’s homework:  Write a ONE PAGE journal entry on a topic that begins with “S”.  For example, you could write about:  shoes, shopping, spring, school, a time when I was sorry, et cetera.

Tonight's homework

Greetings! Many students did not remember to get parent signatures on their tests from last week. Please do so ASAP.
Homework for Blocks 2 and 3: Complete BOTH sides of graphic organizer to plan for tomorrow's in-class essay. You need to do both sides because you don't know which essay you will be required to write during class. Both GOs will be graded along with the essay.
Homework for Block 4: Using correct letter form (indents, commas, et cetera) write a 3 or more sentence letter to a classmate. It needs to be school-appropriate, of course, since Mrs. Wald will be reading it first!!!

Monday News and Homework

Projects are due tomorrow for blocks 2 and 3.  The students had several hours last week and an hour today in class.  I showed them a rubric for how the presentation will be graded, so there will be no surprises.  If the project isn’t done, it needs to be finished tonight.

All classes got Word Whiz Test 5 returned today.  It needs to be signed and returned to me for a grade.

Block 4 has a worksheet on commas to do for homework.

Thursday

All students took Word Whiz test # 5 today.

Homework for tonight is only for block 4.  Write a paragraph answering one of the three discussion questions related to the Hiroshima article.

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Tonight's homework is a worksheet entitled, "LA Review #1"

Test is tomorrow.

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

homework

Tonight, students should complete a two-sided review sheet entitled, "Review #1" in preparation for the Word Whiz test on Thursday.

Some groups, unfortunately, still have not yet finished their books, especially in Block Two.  Parents of students in block 2, please encourage your son or daughter to FINISH the book tonight, unless it would really be a hardship to do so.  I know that the Chinese Cinderella group has about 100 pages left, so finishing it all tonight might be impossible, but maybe half then the last half tomorrow?  A few students in the Bound group are about 40 pages to the end, so they can certainly handle finishing it.  In glancing around the room, I think the other two groups are either done or very nearly done.

Clearly, the projects will be done much more thoroughly and the (surprise) in-class essay (surprise) will earn a better grade if the students have finished reading their books.

New Marking Period

WELCOME TO THE FIFTH MARKING PERIOD!

We are beginning to read MYSTERIES outside of class, and we're finishing up our Asian novels in class.  We'll be doing projects this week, presenting them next week, and then starting a POETRY unit.  Yee-Ha!

Tonight's homework:  A double-sided worksheet of review for the Word Whiz test.

Test will be on Thursday, and will cover the newest 10 Fun and Useful Word, the newest word parts, and a smattering of review words from the rest of the year (language arts terms, word parts, fun and useful words).

No new homework

Students were given a list of missing work (if they had any) and should work on that tonight.

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

This week

Students have no new homework, but many of them did not have their projects ready for today. They should complete it if they have not yet done so. Other students have been spoken to about missing assignments, and should possibly use tonight's "free" time to complete them.
This should be a light week for homework, since we are at the tail end of a marking period.
Next marking period's outside reading book is mystery or crime fiction. Project details will be posted ASAP.
